⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟
This book takes a look at the history of English spelling and why words are written the way they are. Starting with the Anglo-Saxons and going through to the present day, Crystal shows how problem solving, events, and good intentions shaped our spelling into what it is today.
While Spell It Out is not necessarily the best for late night reading, the author does write in a way to make a normally dry topic approachable to a reader with no background in linguistics. Crystal does not only bring up the “why” of spelling. He also gives suggestions of how we can better teach it to our children, making it an especially beneficial read to both teachers and parents.
